2010 Q&A

 2009

Q Hey Drew, been reading NASCAR is thinking about shelving the wing in favor of a spoiler… How bad will that set you guys back with Daytona only a few weeks away?
James Adams, Port Reading, N.J.
A The change would cause us to do some quick wind tunnel testing, but would put everyone in the same boat of an unknown. Being the biggest race of the season, I would think they would wait to make a change like that.

Q Drew, I’m sure all of you are busy getting Matt’s new sponsored cars ready. Now if NASCAR brings back the rear spoiler, how much more work will that involve?
Carol Langhoff, Greenfield, Wis.
A An aerodynamic change that big would take some work for sure. We would do everything we could as a company to track- and tunnel-test the effects the change would make. A change like that would alter a lot of things, from air flow into Matt’s air conditioner to the style of set-up we run to take full advantage of the available downforce.

Q

When you were growing up, who was your favorite NASCAR driver?
Matt Holschuh, Fond du Lac, Wis.

A I liked watching Dale Earnhardt, but my favorite to watch and learn about was David Pearson. I think what Pearson did in limited times on the track was extremely impressive.

Q Hey Drew! I will be graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Connecticut. My dream job would be to work for a NASCAR race team. What do I need to do?
Andrew Grigg, Storrs, Conn.
A I would move to the Charlotte area and get involved with some type of stock car/truck team any way possible.

Q Are the officials employed by NASCAR or by the individual tracks? They seem to be very knowledgeable of the rules and there are certainly a lot of them. Do the same officials travel to each race? How does a person become an official (not that I’m looking for a second job)?
Lola Bartholomew, Lewiston, Idaho
A The officials are employed by NASCAR. The same officials travel to every track just like we do. They are usually former head tech officials from short tracks around the country.
