Q |
What is a typical
race week like for you? Do you have any days off
during the week? What day do you arrive at the
track?
David Field, Burlington, N.J. |
Past Q&A

 |
|
A |
Every week is a little
different; it depends on testing, sponsor
appearances, etc. We typically travel on
Thursday afternoon, and hope we’re able to
return home after the race on Sunday. Some weeks
I will be home Monday through Thursday, and some
weeks I might only be home for a day.

Q |
How physically and
mentally demanding is Bristol? What do you do to
prepare? Thanks.
Haden Key, Greenwood, Ark. |
|
A |
Bristol is one of the
more demanding tracks, both physically and
mentally, because of its size and speed.
Everything happens pretty fast there and there’s
not a lot of time to react. I don’t do anything
special to prepare for that race. I approach it
like any other.

Q |
Matt, I grew up
watching you in Kaukauna and have a question
about getting started in racing. My son is 5 and
is extremely interested in racing, and wants to
be a race car driver. How do I go about getting
him started? What age did you start?
Curt Coenen, Sheboygan,
Wis. |
|
A |
I didn’t start racing
until I was 16. I was the chief mechanic on my
dad’s car until then. It’s different these days
with kids starting younger and younger all the
time. I like quarter midgets for kids that age
since they are a lot safer than go carts. But
they are more expensive, and I don’t think they race
them in your area.

Q |
What is your take
on the Goodyear tire situation? Thanks, and Good
Luck!
Mitzi Wood,
Mukwonago, Wis. |
|
A |
I don’t know there
really is a “situation.” Some people were
unhappy with the performance of the tire last
weekend, but Goodyear works really hard to
balance safety and performance. They miss it a
little sometimes, and that’s frustrating as a
competitor, but you just have to adapt the best
you can.
