Q Matt, was there anybody on the track Sunday at Martinsville that did not hit you? It has to be frustrating to be at a track you really do not like and have these things happen. Good luck at Texas.
Fred Hester, St. Peters, Mo.

A Thanks, the race was much more eventful than I was hoping for. Hopefully this will be a better week.

Q Does a NASCAR driver’s pit crew build a car from scratch, or do drivers buy a car and then modify it?
Benjamin, San Diego, Calif.
A The teams build the cars pretty much from scratch. We build the frames, engines, and put the bodies on. We also build a lot of the bolt-on components but we do purchase brakes and things like that from outside vendors.

Q

Other than all your #17 Ford Fusions, what cars do you own and what is your favorite?
Adam Lambert, Goulburn NSW, Australia

A My favorite is my 2005 Ford GT. It’s an awesome car that Ford Motor Company gave me after our championship in 2003.

Q I was wondering what was the first car you ever drove? If you are like many people, it was your parents’ car; so my second question is, what was the first car you ever owned?
Jane Sullivan Dover, Del.
A I don’t know about the first car I ever drove; it was probably one of my dad’s furniture delivery vans. The first car I owned was an ’82 Honda Accord 4-door. It was awful. It was a hand-me-down from my sister, and I had to work on it for weeks just to get it to run.

Q I listen to your in-car audio every week thanks to NASCAR Trackpass, and I’d like to know more about the origins of the “Cupcake” and “Missile Crisis” nicknames.
Matt Burgess Gainesville, Fla.
A Well, “Cupcake” is what our spotter calls Harvick. It’s an inside joke between them and as hard as I try, neither will tell me what it means, so it must be good. The other one is kind of an inside joke, so I think I better leave it there....

Q Hey Matt, I will be watching you on TV and listening to you on the radio, I see you driving side by side and through the corner, all the while making jokes with your spotter. Is this racing thing easier than it looks? Plus, you guys are hilarious to listen to.
Cody Mortensen, Clearfield, Utah
A Well, it can’t be that hard or I wouldn’t be able to do it!!!! It just depends, there are times when you are concentrating very hard, but I think we all perform better when we can try to be relaxed and keep it light.....

Q Every race I listen to you on the scanner. You and Bob crack me up. I learn a lot about racing by listening to you. Can your team listen to any other teams that are not Roush-Fenway?
Jackie Tobritzhofer, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.
A Yes, the crew chiefs and engineers will scan the other teams at times to see what they are up to. Katie will scan others during the race. I always have questions on the way home about what happened with everyone, so she gives me the scoop.
