Q |
Hi Matt, I was
wondering if you have any advice for my
17-year-old son who wants to work on a NASCAR
race team someday? He now works and travels with
a USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series team, he is the
front tire changer.

2008 Q&A

. . . . . . . .

 |
|
A |
Really that’s the best
way, there’s nothing like experience. Most crew
chiefs and managers would much rather hire
someone with real life race experience than
someone who has been to school and never been to
the track or worked on a car. Next step would be
passing out resumes.

Q |
I know you raced at
Jefferson Speedway, but in most of your bios it
doesn’t talk much about that track as one of
your starter tracks, how many years did you race
there or did you not really do whole seasons
there?
Laura Gilbert, Jefferson, Wis. |
|
A |
I didn’t spend a lot
of time racing there. I raced just a couple
times my first year, and maybe just a few after.
Just a few year-end specials along with the
super late specials they had in the early 90s.

Q |
Are you disappointed that Robbie Riser is not
your crew chief and he has helped Carl win races
when he should be helping you?
Patti Dukes, Walbridge, Ohio |
|
A |
He has been helping me
and the team. Robbie has done countless things
for me, my career, and the DeWALT 17 team. He
has always been really good at doing whatever he
sets his mind to, and I’m glad he could fill in
and help the 99.

Q |
I plan to come to
Newton to see you at the Iowa Speedway in July.
Do you think NASCAR could be persuaded to
replace the race at Martinsville with Newton? We
have been fans since you started with the Cup
races, and it will be nice to finally watch you
race in person.
Randy Davison, Eldora, Iowa |
|
A |
I HOPE SO!!!! Haha. I
would like them to replace Martinsville with
anywhere! I haven’t been to the Iowa track yet,
but I heard it’s really nice and I’m looking
forward to racing there.

Q |
What’s your
favorite color?
Gary Kallin, Jefferson City |
|
A |
Probably black.

Q |
With Talladega
coming up, do you or have you ever gone back to
watch previous races to see who you can draft
with, their tendencies while in traffic or who
you would never work with on the track.
Steve Bartik, Rotterdam, N.Y. |
|
A |
I don’t watch much
film; the cars, rules and track conditions seem
to change yearly. I seem to learn the most in
practice. Then you spend most of the race
figuring out whose car yours works well with and
who you draft well with.
