First of all,
thanks for coming home for the MKFC autograph
appearance. Do you enjoy signing autographs, or
is it more just a cost of doing business sort of
thing? How many autographs do you think you’ve
signed [overall], and do you think signing that
many affects your driving? My hands are tired
just typing this. Thanks.

2008 Q&A

. . . . . . . .

 |
|
A |
Ha, maybe that's why I
have been hitting the wall so much lately!!! I
enjoy signing autographs, but I really enjoy
seeing and meeting the fans in person,
especially when I’m away from the track and have
some time spend with them. At the track, there’s
times when I feel bad; you can’t really get to
all the fans in the garage and on pit road when
you’re in there trying to concentrate and think
about your race car and what your schedule is
and what’s coming up next.

Q |
Some drivers have
been known to name their favorite cars. Do you
name yours?
Michele McNamara, Marion |
|
A |
I did name my cars
when we first started racing late models. It was
kind of a fad, and I don’t think anyone really
does it anymore. I actually started way back
then because I always heard of Rusty [Wallace]
naming his Cup cars.

Q |
Do you think you will get a pole this year, or
do you guys just pretty much only work on race
setup during the first practice? Because the Bud
Shootout is boring without you. Thanks Matt, and
good luck this year.
Dustin Arttus, Sparta, Wis. |
|
A |
Man, I hope so! We try
hard to qualify well, but we do spend most of
our practice on race setup. There are some teams
who will spend all of Friday’s practice just on
qualifying. I still think we are ahead by
working on the race. Its not about where you
start, it’s about where you finish!

Hi Matt, Everyone
always wants to know what’s the best thing about
racing in NASCAR, but I would like to know
what’s the worst thing about it? The media,
traveling, not being able to say how you’re
really feeling after a race, etc?
Kirk Vermillion, West Bend |
|
A |
I think it’s different
for everyone. I’ve always been the guy in the
back row of church. I’m somewhat uncomfortable
doing speeches, photo shoots, etc. Now sometimes
they can be a lot of fun, but it’s something I
usually get nervous about. But overall it’s a
pretty great gig!

Q |
Was there another
job that you wanted before racing, or were you a
driver all your life?
Nick Purcell, Orland Park, Ill. |
|
A |
Not one that I wanted.
If I couldn’t drive, I would still be involved
in the sport at some level, probably setting up
cars, building cars, or something like that.
