Q |
Are you and Carl
Edwards getting along? Do you think the 99 team
is taking all the good parts, because I know you
are a better driver than he is.
Kenneth Cole, Abingdon, Md. |
Past Q&A

 |
|
A |
Yes we are [getting
along], and no I don’t [think the 99 is getting
‘all the good parts’]. We all have access to the
same stuff, although at Bristol Carl was running
a somewhat experimental setup. With him being
locked in the Chase, he could gamble on that. We
had to take a little more conservative approach
setup-wise to make sure we made it to the end.
It was cool he won and we learned a lot from his
race that we can apply next time.

Q |
Why is it that when
you unload your car and it isn’t right, you have
a struggle getting it right in practice, but by
the end of a race it handles much better after
just 10 or so 15-second pit stops, and not
during all that time before a race starts.
Richard Uhlendorf, Tobyhanna,
Pa. |
|
A |
The track conditions
are constantly changing and you have to try to
adapt and adjust to them during race. We really
weren’t that great at the end either, but it was
slightly improved.

Q |
Hi Matt, at the Pro Cup race Wednesday night at
Bristol, I noticed the lap-down cars were really
good about heeding the “move over” flag. They
seemed to not get in the way of the leaders. It
was a different story, however, during the
Saturday night Cup race. Lapped cars seemed to
try their best and stay in everyone’s way, no
matter how many laps down they were or if they
were racing for position. Do you have any
insight into why?
J.R. Robertson, Columbia, S.C. |
|
A |
Everyone in Cup is
racing hard for positions, whether it be the
lucky dog, lead lap, or lap down positions. They
are all important and everyone is on a different
agenda.

Q |
Hi Matt, do you as
a driver get to approve the commercials you do,
or are they just worked into the sponsorship?
Karen Schuldt, La Crescent, Minn. |
|
A |
I usually get to look
at the final version of a commercial before they
put it on air. Usually after the commercials are
made I don’t have a huge say in it. But I get to
look at the storyboards ahead of time. There
have been a couple in the past I didn’t like and
they were changed before we filmed them.

Q |
I prefer the Sunday
afternoon races the most, but just found out
that Atlanta will be a night race next fall.
With more and more races moving to the
nighttime, I wondered your preference, night or
day.
Sean Ladd, Edelstein, Ill. |
|
A |
It doesn’t matter a
whole lot to me. I do like Saturday night races
quite a bit because it gives fans and teams time
to travel home and maybe see family and friends
a little before the work week starts.
