Q |
Hey Matt, over the years you have been able to
move to the front regardless of qualifying
position, many times without the ideal set up.
It amazes me how many times the past few years
that you were taken out of races by other
drivers. Since your team is consistently
competitive, do you think that the COT and the
mix of more inexperienced drivers make it more
important to qualify higher every weekend?
Thanks.

2008 Q&A

. . . . . . . .

 |
|
A |
I think qualifying is more important than ever
for a few reasons. It’s harder to pass with this
car/tire combination than what we’ve had the
last year or so. With all the rules, the cars
are closer to the same speed than they ever have
been and there are a lot of competitive big
teams. With that being said, if you get your car
to handle better than the rest of the guys for
the race, there is enough time to get to the
front regardless of where you start.

Q |
Am I correct in thinking you really don’t shift
much other than to get up to speed?
Larry Ryan,
Norfolk, Va. |
|
A |
Other than the two road courses, we only shift
on restarts and pit road.

Q |
Have you, like Tony Stewart or Michael Waltrip,
ever considered being an owner and starting your
own team?
Ann Elizabeth
Sims, Miami, Fla. |
|
A |
NEVER. I really like driving and concentrating
on that. Everyone is different, but the way I am
I would have a hard time focusing on being a
team owner and a driver. I don’t think I want
the headaches.

Q |
If you could give any advice to someone who
wants to someday race alongside you or any other
sprint cup driver, what would you tell them?
David Rypkema,
Lonsdale, Minn. |
|
A |
I
think the biggest thing is winning at whatever
level or track you are racing at and try to move
on to different tracks, divisions, etc., to get
experience.

Q |
Carl Edwards is coming to London for the Race Of
Champions this year, is that something you would
like to try sometime?
Jamie Howlett, London, England |
|
A |
I am
not sure. I really don’t know a lot about it. I
have never really traveled out of the US, so it
might be something interesting to try someday.
