Matt, I have followed your success since the
90’s Busch series. I actually shed a tear today
with your win at Daytona. My question is: How
did you make it through the middle of the “big”
wreck that unfolded all around you? Do you feel
that a higher power was with you?

. . . . . . . .

|
A |
That was one of those wrecks were I really
didn’t have to time to react very much. I just
moved the car left a little and we were able to
slide through. It was pretty amazing that
everyone got wrecked around us and we were able
to make it through.

I have two questions. What do you do after you
finish a race or win a race? And, did you have
fun spraying the champagne on your team?
Joey Betzel,

A |
When we are lucky enough to win, we go to
Victory Lane and celebrate with the team. After
that we usually have quite a few post race
obligations, mostly media. It’s ALWAYS fun
spraying champagne on the team after a win.

Congratulations on your win at Daytona. It was
awesome to watch. I watched you on David
Letterman. You were great. Funny too. Did you
have a good time on the show? Anything strange
happen?

A |
I did have a good time on Letterman. I have
always been a Letterman fan and that was first
chance I have had to be on as the guest to be
interviewed. Nothing too strange happened. The
week went smoothly and we had a great time.

Congrats on winning Daytona! Three questions: 1)
On your last pit stop, you gained 4 spots. What
was done to your car to get you in and out so
fast? 2) Harvick was helping you get past Sadler
and looked pretty strong. Do you think you could
have held him off for the remainder of the race?
3) If the caution didn’t come out, how many more
laps did you have until you had to pit again?
Joshua Kotula,

We
just had a great stop, they just hit everything
perfect to beat the other teams out. It’s hard
to say if we could have held him off Harvick the
rest of the race, but I do feel good about how
the car was running and our chances no matter
how long we ran. I think we had about 20 laps or
so before we had to pit.

Hi Matt, I’m sure this is going to come up a
lot. Congrats on the Daytona 500. I mean no
disrespect because you are a great driver, but
does it take away from the win at all that it
was given due to rain and the race was not
actually complete all the way? Had it been
completed are you confident you would have still
won? Thanks for your time and good luck in 2009.

It
doesn’t bother me at all, it was really almost
harder for our team to do it in a shortened
race, seeing that we had to start last and pass
everyone. We just barely got there in time! Also
every team knew the rain was coming and was
racing hard to get into the lead. It didn’t
sneak up on anyone and we all had the same
opportunity. I felt good about our car and
chances no matter how long the race was, but you
never know what can happen.
