Kenseth penalized for last-lap push as he runs out of fuel
The rain-delayed Geico 400 didn’t quite end the way Team 17 envisioned when they
started from pole Monday morning. Kenseth had a strong car and ran in the top 5
most of the race. But what would be the race’s final caution fell with most
teams just outside
their
fuel window. Kenseth led several laps of the final run, but had to back off on
the throttle to save fuel, running out on the final lap of the race. Kenseth
briefly received assistance from the 38 car on the last lap before being waved
off, and Kenseth crossed the finish line in 8th place. But NASCAR
penalized the 17 for getting help on the last lap, dropping him to 21st in the
finishing order. It also drops Kenseth to 10th place in the Chase standings.

Matt
Kenseth was hoping to claim victory Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway,
especially with a special paint scheme aboard his No. 17 Ford and the fact that
the car was the same chassis from his Texas win last month. Despite Matt’s
leading the most laps, numerous cautions shuffled up the field’s pit stop
rotations forcing the race a fuel mileage finish, and Kenseth finished 14th in

KENSETH WINS
AT DOVER!
Matt Kenseth started 24th at Dover on Sunday, but quickly cut through the field
into the Top 10, where he ran most of the day. When the caution came out late in
the race, Kenseth and crew chief Jimmy Fennig made the mid-stop call to take two
tires instead of four, and Kenseth exited pit road in first place. The green
flag flew with 30 to go and after a brief battle with Mark Martin, Kenseth took
the lead and never looked back, crossing the stripe for his second victory of
the 2011 season and his first in the Wiley X Sunglasses car.
