Sponsorship Announced:
Bayer Consumer Care to back Matt
Kenseth in 2003
May
31, 2002
DOVER, DE
(May 31, 2002) Bayer Consumer Care is pleased to announce that it
will partner with Reiser Enterprises and driver Matt Kenseth to
compete in 15 selected Busch Series events throughout the 2003
racing season. The Bayer Consumer Care products of Bayer
Aspirin, Alka-Seltzer, Alka-Seltzer Plus and Aleve will alternate as
primary sponsors on the No. 17 Ford Taurus owned by Wisconsin
natives, John and Robbie Reiser.
The 2003
season will mark the 11th season that Bayer Consumer Care has served
as a primary sponsor in the NASCAR Busch Series. Over the past
10 years, Bayer Consumer Care has teamed with such racing notables
as Chad Little, Terry Labonte, Buckshot Jones and most recently Tony
Raines. Bayer’s association with NASCAR has helped to
produce 10 wins, including six in 1996 with Chad Little.
With Matt
Kenseth, Bayer Consumer Care will have the opportunity to align
itself with one of the brightest young superstars in the sport of
NASCAR. In 132 Busch Series starts with Reiser Enterprises
since 1996, Kenseth has compiled 12 wins, 7 poles, 57 top-five
finishes and 82 top-five finishes. Kenseth’s statistics are
equal to a win every 10.9 starts and a finish in the top-ten in over
sixty percent of the events in which he competes. In addition
to his on-track accomplishments in the NASCAR Busch Series, Kenseth
is also a proven performer in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
In only his third season at stock car racing’s highest level,
Kenseth has amassed three victories, the 2000 Rookie-of-the-Year
Title and currently sits second in the overall Winston Cup point
standings for 2002.
“I feel
really lucky to have a company such as Bayer Consumer Care come
aboard the car for 15 races,” commented Kenseth concerning his new
partnership for 2003. “I think it will be a really great
match. I believe they will do a great job for us and we will
be able to do a great job for them. My goals for next year are
to obviously finish the best we can each week but to also win
races.”
Kenseth
will carry the Bayer Consumer Care colors for the first time in 2003
during the season opening Busch Series event at the Daytona
International Speedway. “The last few times we have been to
Daytona, we have been really strong,” stated Kenseth. “I
think we have finished in the top-three the last three or four times
we have been there. I feel good about going to Daytona as well
as all the rest of the tracks. Las Vegas, Charlotte and the
other intermediate tracks have been good tracks for us in the past.
We have plenty of lead time to get everything done and get all our
ducks in a row, so I expect us to be strong everywhere.”
Leigh
Peter, Director of Bayer Consumer Promotions, echoed Kenseth’s
positive outlook for the 2003 season. “I think Matt will
bring a lot of excitement to the program next season. Matt, as
well as Reiser Enterprises, has a track record of success in the
Busch Series that speaks for itself. As a sponsor, I think it
is a wonderful opportunity for Bayer Consumer Care to align itself
with one of NASCAR’s most recognized drivers. I am looking
forward to a successful partnership both on and off the track.”
Prior to
last week’s event at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Peter informed
BACE Motorsports that Bayer Consumer Care would not be returning to
their team as a primary sponsor for the 2003 racing season.
“Bayer
Consumer Care has enjoyed a successful partnership over the past
four years with Tony Raines and BACE Motorsports,” commented
Peter. I wish them only the best in their future racing
endeavors.”
“I
am glad that Bayer Consumer Care has decided to join our team next
season,” said team co-owner John Reiser. “Bayer Consumer
Care is a great company to be associated with and I am pleased that
they have given our team the opportunity to compete in 15 events
next year.”
In
addition, the No. 17 Reiser Enterprise entry is also seeking major
associate sponsorship for the 15-event schedule.

Matt
Kenseth’s thoughts on racing at Dover
International Speedway
“Last
year at Dover was just embarrassing. We struggled at both races,
and had no idea why we ran so bad. I love Dover because of the
high banking and fast speeds. It’s a hard track to tame. Also, I
like it because that is where I made my first start in a Winston
Cup car in 1998. We finished third and second at the races in
Charlotte. Maybe this weekend it will be first. We learned a lot
in the test session and hope to have it all figured out when we
unload there this weekend.”
Crew
Chief Robbie Reiser’s thoughts on Dover International Speedway:
“We
are taking car 3 to Dover. It has not been raced since June of
2000 at Pocono. We really struggled last year at Dover, so we
decided to go up there and test a few weeks ago. We had no idea
what we were doing right or wrong, so we went there with a clean
sheet of paper, and started over. Car 3 has a new body on it, and
we felt like the test was successful. We were really good at Dover
up until last year, so we hope it helps us for this weekend.”
Spotter
Mike Calinoff’s thoughts on Dover International Speedway:
“The
Spotters Stand at Dover is perched very high and affords us a view
that is free of any blind spots. I enjoy spotting here because it’s
one of Matt’s favorite tracks and he drives it so well; he has a
lot of fun racing here and if the driver is having fun, the
spotter is having fun as well!”
NOTES OF
INTEREST:
Wrapping
up Charlotte...
Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Ricky Craven, Ricky Rudd and Jeff
Gordon will all be eligible for the next $1 million Winston No
Bull 5 bonus in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. By finishing second,
Kenseth scored his third top-10 finish in six races at Lowe’s
Motor Speedway.
Closing
the gap...
Kenseth is second in the point standings, only 87 behind leader
Sterling Marlin.
Dover
success...
Kenseth has competed in six races at Dover International Speedway;
scoring three top-10 finishes, all in his first three races. He
has never led a NASCAR Winston Cup race at Dover. He has two Busch
Series wins at the track.
Matt
Kenseth Appearances...

Crew
and Consistency Keys to Kenseth’s Second at Lowe’s
May
27, 2002
CONCORD,
NC (May 27, 2002) — It was a Roush Racing romp at Lowe’s
Motor Speedway as Matt Kenseth and his No. 17 DEWALT Team brought
home a second place finish in the Coca Cola Racing Family 600 behind
teammate Mark Martin.
Kenseth qualified the car in
the 21st position, but started the race 19th due to teams who had to
change engines and drop to the rear of the field. Neither Kenseth
nor the team were happy with the performance of the car in final
practice so they made some changes prior to the race, and crossed
their fingers that they were the right ones.
With 600 miles ahead of
them, the DEWALT Team’s game plan was to be smart, patient, and be
there at the end-making no mistakes. A few laps into the race,
Kenseth said the car was on the loose side, and brought the car in
for adjustments as early as lap 27. He moved into the top-10 by lap
53.
One of the key moments of
the night came on lap 70. Kenseth was running sixth, and the DEWALT
team had a 13.82 second pit stop sending him out 2nd. On lap 104
Kenseth pitted again, and came out with the lead.
As the race wore on, Kenseth
battled among the top three drivers. The No. 17 car was very loose,
and the team knew they needed to make it to the last 100 laps, so
Kenseth decided to be smart, and follow the leaders.
At the halfway point of the
race, Kenseth was fourth. During a round of green flag pit stops,
Kenseth’s crew again sent him out on the track with the lead.
Disaster nearly stuck the
team when while running second, Kenseth radioed to crew chief Robbie
Reiser that he heard a vibration in the right front tire. The
problem worsened and he was forced to pit on lap 309 under green.
The team would have been able to complete the race on one more pit
stop, but the early stop made them 24 laps short on fuel. The crew
made a four tire pit stop and Kenseth found himself a lap down in
the 21st position. A belt broke in the right front tire, shredding
part of it, so Kenseth made a good call and avoided a possible blown
right front tire.
From there, the only thing
that could save the team was a caution — and luckily, they got
one.
On lap 360 of 400, leader
Jimmie Johnson tangled with Hut Stricklin bringing out the caution
flag. The field pitted, and Johnson overshot his pit stall, losing
valuable track position. The DEWALT crew serviced the No. 17 car and
sent it out onto the track in third. Kenseth then battled his way to
second, almost catching leader Mark Martin in the dash to the
checkered flags.
It was Kenseth’s eighth
top-10 finish of the year. He is now eligible for the Winston No
Bull 5 at the July 6th Pepsi 400 in Daytona.
“Mark
and I were hammer down,” said Kenseth in a post race interview. “I
think I could have caught him if it weren’t for those lapped cars.
We sort of lost a little momentum there, and I think we broke a
valve spring late in the race. My team did a great job in the pits
today — they keep backing up their championship title with
performances with nights like this.
“We
just raced smart. Its a long race, and there were many opportunities
to work on the car. Mark told me when I went to see him in victory
lane that I would’ve had to spin him out to pass him. He was going
for a million dollars and he was determined to get back to the
winners circle.
“Overall,
I’m happy with that. I would have been happier if we won, but I
will take that. Some of my favorite tracks are coming up and I think
we should be pretty good.”
Kenseth and the DEWALT team
head to Dover Downs next week, the site of Kenseth’s Winston Cup
debut in 1998.

Kenseth’s thoughts on racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway
“I love racing at
Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Returning to the site of your first win
is always special, and going back to a track we run really well at
always helps. We were pretty good last weekend in The Winston, so
hopefully everything will last through the 600 miles and we will
put that car in Victory Lane.
“The 600 is an awesome
race. It begins in the day and ends at night, so you have to
adjust your car for the changing temperatures, and track
conditions. Its definitely a race that keeps everyone on their
toes.”
Crew
Chief Robbie Reiser’s thoughts on Lowe’s Motor Speedway
“We made a decision this
week to take car 19 back to the 600 for this weekend. It’s the
same car we ran at The Winston and we were pleased with the
performance. It should be a good showing for the DEWALT team if
everything goes our way.”
Spotter
Mike Calinoff’s thoughts on Lowe’s Motor Speedway
“The view at Charlotte
is as good as it gets. The ‘600’ is obviously a favorite of
mine since we won our first race there. I am confident that we can
keep our momentum rolling and fare well this weekend.”

Kenseth
third overall in The Winston dash for cash
May
17, 2002
CONCORD,
NC (May 19, 2002) — After starting The Winston from the
pole position, Matt Kenseth and the No. 17 team finished third
overall to win $122,500 in the all-star event.
The running of The Winston
consisted of three segments. A 40-lap event in which each of the 27
teams had to make a green flag pit stop. After much discussion of
strategy, Kenseth followed the leaders and pitted on lap 27 while
running third. The DEWALT Crew changed four tires, and made an air
pressure adjustment because the car was tight. The team pulled off a
13.9 second pit stop, but the No. 17 car suffered sheet metal damage
from run- ins with other cars when Kenseth was entering and exiting
pit road. The damage threw the setup of the car off and, Kenseth
fell back in the pack because he was so loose. The No. 17 team
finished the first segment 13th and the top-20 cars advanced to the
next segment.
During the ten minute break,
the team worked feverishly to fix the sheet metal damage and made
some adjustments on the car to improve handling.
The second segment was 30
laps. After starting 13th, Kenseth moved himself into position to
advance to the final 20 laps and finish 5th.
To add excitement to the
event, Winston inverts the field for the final segment. NASCAR.com
allowed fans to vote on how many cars would be inverted, and the end
result was to invert all 10 cars.
Kenseth then started the
final segment in 6th. He worked his way into third to finish out the
night, just behind winner Ryan Newman and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
“The Winston is a fun
event, and its all about teamwork,” said crew chief Robbie Reiser.
“We pulled together as a team to go out there and win this thing.
It is not a win, but its something to be proud of.”
“If it wasn’t for my
guys, we would not have sat on the pole,” said Kenseth. “I owe
them a lot of credit for this weekend and appreciate all the hard
work they put into this deal. Overall it was a great run for the
DEWALT guys. We were pretty fast in the first race, I thought we had
a third-or fourth-place car, but got hit coming in the pits and got
a lot of damage. We were pretty lucky to hang on to a top-15. I was
happy with the car in the second run but it was just a little too
tight.
“It was exciting, and a
really fun race. We started on the pole and brought it home third,
it was a really fun weekend.”
Kenseth and the team will
make a decision whether they are going to take the same car back
next weekend for the Coca Cola Racing Family 600.
Kenseth
on pole for The Winston
May
17, 2002
CONCORD,
NC (May 17, 2002) — Matt Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT
Racing team snagged their first pole in the Winston Cup Series
Friday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the non-points event,
The Winston.
During qualifying Kenseth
and his World Championship Pit Crew pulled off a 13.00 second four
tire pit stop. The fastest stop of the night, combined with a
three-lap qualifying run for a total time of 112.938 seconds, paved
the way for the DEWALT Team to claim the pole position.
The over the wall pit crew
consists of Phil Drye, front tire changer; Justin Nottestad, front
tire carrier; Russ Strupp substituting for injured car chief Jeff
Vandermoss as jackman; Benjy Grubbs, gasman; Dave Paronto, catch
can; Dave Smith, rear tire changer; and Bryan Dunaway, rear tire
carrier. In addition, Andy Ward serves as the Pit Coach for Roush
Racing.
“That was pretty cool,”
said Kenseth. “I messed up that second lap, so it was the pit stop
that gave me some time to play with. These guys work so hard each
day to make these cars as good as we can get them, and to be the
best on pit road.
“We have a pretty good hot
rod here, its the fastest car I ever had to date here at Lowe’s.
We hope to back up that with a win tomorrow night. I can’t wait to
race.”
“These guys have been
doing a great job for us,” said crew chief Robbie Reiser. “This
DEWALT Ford team is all about the people, so I really don’t know
what else to say.”
The Winston kicks off in
All-star style Saturday night, and the DEWALT Team is ready to win
it all.

Matt
Kenseth’s thoughts on racing in The Winston:
“The Winston is a really
neat deal. It takes place at one of my favorite tracks —
Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The stakes are high at The Winston and
you will see some seriously un-conservative racing. With the new
setup there will be no holding back, because you don’t want to be
eliminated. Kind of like survival of the fastest.
“This race is not only
about the drivers though, its about the crews as well. If the
DEWALT team can do what they have been doing all year on pit road
during both qualifying and the first segment, we should have a big
advantage. The pit stops have to be good. Besides that, its going
to be fun because there are no points on the line.”
Crew
Chief Robbie Reiser’s thoughts on The Winston:
“I’ve told the team
this is an all-star night. Winston puts on quite a show, and they
really highlight the guys — giving them their turn in the
limelight. It’s their night to shine, and we want to take it all
home this year. I think we’ve got the team to win the Winston,
but it will take 110% effort on everyone’s part. We are all
excited to be a part of The Winston, and it helps to not have to
race our way in. This way we can focus on being there at the
end.”
NOTES OF
INTEREST:

Kenseth
charges back from two laps down to finish sixth in Richmond
May

RICHMOND,
Va. (May 5, 2002) —
Matt
Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT Team put forth an amazing effort in
the two day running of the Pontiac Excitement 400 to finish sixth at
Richmond International Raceway.
Kenseth and the team were
solid all weekend long, with practice times in the top-10. They
qualified seventh, but were able to start the race fifth, because
two cars had to drop to the back of the field due to engine changes.
Rain delayed the race on
Saturday night by almost two hours. When the green flag flew,
Kenseth made his way up into the third position. He was battling
with the No. 1 car of Steve Park when the two cars collided. Kenseth’s
car sustained damage to a brake line, and the exhaust system. The
DEWALT crew intended to fix the problems when the race was red
flagged and postponed due to rain. Kenseth was eighth.
Under NASCAR’s rules and
regulations, teams are not allowed to work on the cars under the red
flag condition. Crew chief Robbie Reiser and the rest of the team
were not able to fix the ailing DEWALT Ford until the next day.
Sunday morning, the skies
cleared and the Pontiac Excitement 400 restarted shortly after noon.
Kenseth immediately brought
the car to the attention of the pit crew to fix the exhaust and
brake line. They lost two laps and were 42nd when the green flag
flew. But that is where it all began.
Through pit strategy,
cautions, and a little luck, Kenseth got his first lap back by
passing leader Ward Burton on lap 121. The No. 17 car was fast, but
Kenseth said it was tight. So the team made track bar and air
pressure adjustments to help Kenseth race to the front.
By lap 284 of the 400 lap
event, Kenseth not only regained the two laps he lost, but was in
10th place. He consistently ran lap times as fast as the leaders.
Kenseth raced his way up to sixth at the finish, and back to second
in the point standings.
“I’m so proud of this
team,” said Kenseth in a post race interview. “That was a great
run. Everybody worked really hard and they did a great job of fixing
our problems. They only lost two laps fixing it and we had a lot of
stuff to fix. It seems like we overcame all of our problems today
and came back to get a top-10 finish out of it. I would have liked
to finish better because I thought our car was better than a
sixth-place car, but I won’t complain too much for how far we were
in the back and how far we came.”
“That kind of performance
is what wins championships,” said Robbie Reiser. “We came here
with a car capable of winning, had some serious problems that were
worse than we originally thought, and got a top-10. Matt is an
awesome racecar driver, and this team is amazing. I could not be
happier.”
Kenseth and the DEWALT Team
are now back in second place in the point standings. They are 132
points away from leader Sterling Marlin.
The DEWALT Team will enjoy a
weekend off, and then head to Dover for a two day test. They are
looking forward to competing in The Winston in two weeks.

Matt
Kenseth’s thoughts on racing at Richmond
International Speedway
“Since the Richmond
races are at night, we can pretty much take the same setup we
had last time, fine tune it, and apply it to the race. Last
fall we were caught in a wreck, so I’m hoping that does not
happen this weekend. Things happen quick at Richmond.
“Overall, we usually run pretty well in Richmond. I like the
.75 mile track and its banking. It makes for some great
racing. I also like the night races because it’s exciting
for the drivers and the fans.”
Crew
Chief Robbie Reiser’s thoughts on racing at Richmond
International Speedway
“The last two races we
have really been pretty bad for us. I don’t think its anything
to worry about. We just had two bad races but when you are chasing
a championship everything counts. Last spring we ran well at
Richmond, so we’re basically looking for the same performance.
In Talladega, we ran well and got caught up in a wreck, and
sometimes you just miss it, and we did just that in California.”
Spotter
Mike Calinoff’s views from above Richmond
International Speedway
“I like spotting
Richmond because I enjoy the night races. The only major problem
there is that they apply a track sealer prior to the race and when
cars spin it creates a thick wall of smoke — it makes my job
just a little tougher.”
