Late tire problems spoil promising
day for USG Sheetrock Brand/DeWALT Ford Taurus
February
27, 2005
FONTANA, CA (February 27, 2005) — What promised to be
a top-10 finish for the No. 17 USG Sheetrock
Brand/DEWALT Ford Taurus in the Auto Club 500 was
spoiled late in the day when the Roush Racing entry cut
a tire down with less than 20 laps to go, resulting in a
disappointing 26th-place finish. The USG/DEWALT No. 17
team began the weekend strong by posting the 11th
quickest lap in the first practice session on Friday,
and topping that with the sixth fastest lap in final
practice. Matt Kenseth qualified the No. 17 in the sixth
position. Kenseth, not known for his qualifying prowess,
was pleased with the team effort and noted that starting
in the third row was like winning the pole to him.
Rolling off in the sixth position, Kenseth took
advantage of his position up front and made it a point
to stay there, remaining in the top five until he
eventually assumed the lead on lap 31. Kenseth led the
field of 43 cars until teammate Carl Edwards took over
the lead on lap 48. Kenseth radioed to his crew that the
No. 17 would not turn as well as the No. 99 Office Depot
Ford Taurus, asking the USG Sheetrock Brand team to free
up the car. Fortunately, debris on the racetrack brought
out a caution on lap 58, and Kenseth was able to bring
the No. 17 Ford Taurus in for service and a wedge
adjustment. The USG/DEWALT team completed service on the
racecar in less than 14 seconds, and Kenseth restarted
the race on lap 66 in the lead. Kenseth led again for
several laps and remained up front until the USG/DEWALT
Ford sustained sheet metal damage to the right front
fender while racing with the No. 24 driven by Jeff
Gordon around lap 119. When the caution flag flew on lap
142, Kenseth brought his car in for repairs to the
fender. After a prolonged stop to repair the right
front, Kenseth returned to the track in the 17th
position as Joe Nemechek was in the lead. Restarting
on lap 150, Kenseth began a dramatic charge to the front
of the field, advancing to the fourth position by lap
191. When a caution flag flew on lap 202, Kenseth
brought the No. 17 in for routine service. The
USG/DEWALT team turned out an impressive stop of 13.7
seconds, gaining two spots to restart the race on lap
209 in the second position. When caution again slowed
the field just a few laps later, the No. 17 USG/DEWALT
race team pitted again taking four fresh tires and
making a minor wedge adjustment to correct a tight
racecar. The No. 17 USG/DEWALT Ford returned to the
track in the eighth position as several teams elected to
stay out on the racetrack or only take two fresh tires.
Shortly after the restart, at lap 232, Kenseth radioed
his crew that he had a tire going down. Kenseth had to
make a green flag pit stop to change right side tires
and went a lap down. With 20 laps to go, Kenseth and the
USG/DEWALT Ford Taurus team did not have the laps needed
to charge back to the front and finished in a
disappointing 26th place. “We had a really great
racecar. Unfortunately, we cut a tire late in the race
and had a disappointing finish. I hate it for the team
and for the USG Sheetrock folks here today. I felt good
about how strong the car was and am looking forward to
going to Las Vegas where we had a good test and a great
victory last year,” said Kenseth. The DEWALT Tools
Ford Taurus has the weekend off and will resume activity
at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, March 11–13.
Rain doesn’t stop Kenseth from posting solid 9th place
finish in California Busch race
February 26, 2005
FONTANA, CA (February 26, 2005) — A red
flag for rain late in the race delayed the finish, but
Matt Kenseth brought the No. 17 Waste Management Ford
home in the 9th position. Roush Racing teammate Mark
Martin was victorious in the Pennzoil Ford, after
leading much of the race. To begin the weekend, the
Waste Management Ford Taurus improved during Saturday’s
practice sessions, from posting the 15th fastest lap in
the first practice, to the 4th quickest in final
practice. Kenseth rolled off in the 17th position for
the start of the Stater Bros. 300, with Tony Stewart on
the pole. Kenseth quickly moved up through the field,
landing in the top five by lap 17. When the first
caution slowed the field on lap 28, Kenseth brought the
Waste Management Ford in for a few adjustments, with the
car feeling a little tight. After tire pressure, wedge
and track bar adjustments, Kenseth returned to the field
in the 7th position. Again, Kenseth charged to the
front of the pack, running as high as 2nd on lap 55,
with Stewart and Martin swapping the lead. When the
caution flag flew on lap 79 for debris on the racetrack,
the No. 17 came in for service, getting four fresh tires
and an adjustment to the left rear spring. The Waste
Management team pulled off an awesome pit stop,
completing service in just 14.2 seconds, and returning
Kenseth to the track in the lead for the restart on lap
84. Martin quickly took the lead from Kenseth, the No.
9 Pennzoil Ford being the dominant car of the race.
However, the Waste Management Ford continued to run in
the top five until rain forced a red flag which stopped
the field. Luckily, the rain quickly subsided and the
fans were able to watch this one until the finish.
Unfortunately, the rain delay and the resulting
changes to the track were not kind to the No. 17 Waste
Management Ford. Restarting the race in the 4th
position, Kenseth fell a few spots in the final laps of
the race, ending up with a 9th place finish. “We had a
good car for most of the day,” said Kenseth.
“Unfortunately, our car fell off towards the end of the
race. We just weren’t as strong as Mark [Martin] all
day. But we’ll go back to the shop, compare notes, and
hopefully be as strong as he was today when we go to
Atlanta.” The Waste Management Ford Taurus will not be
traveling to Mexico with the Busch Series next weekend.
The No. 17 will resume activity in Atlanta, April 18–20.
Matt Kenseth sports USG Sheetrock brand
colors at California Speedway
February 23, 2005
CONCORD,
N.C. (February 23, 2005) — Matt Kenseth will make his
first of three starts in the No. 17 USG Sheetrock Brand
Ford Taurus this Sunday afternoon at California
Speedway. USG, a leading manufacturer of building
materials, will be featured as the primary paint scheme
on Kenseth’s No. 17 Ford Taurus. USG’s red and blue
colors will be seen again at the Brickyard 400,
Indianapolis and Bass Pro Shops 500 at Atlanta.
Joining DeWALT and USG Sheetrock Brand on the thematic
construction industry based team sponsorship are
Carhartt and Trex Decking and Railing.
Kenseth, the 2003 NASCAR Cup champion, is looking for a
strong weekend at the Auto Club 500 after a
disappointing finish in the Daytona 500 opener due to an
engine failure on Lap 33 of 200. The Cambridge, Wis.
native was credited with an uncharacteristic 42nd-place
finish. “I know this upcoming weekend will showcase our
team’s ability and what we have been working on during
the off season,” said Kenseth.
Kenseth has competed in nine Cup races at the two-mile
oval and has finished in the top 10 three times -- third
(2000), ninth (2003) and fourth (2004 May race). He has
led a total of 135 laps at the southern California
superspeedway.
The No. 17 USG Sheetrock Brand team tested at Fontana
earlier this month and were pleased with the Ford
Taurus. Crew Chief Robbie Reiser will be looking for
satisfaction on Sunday after a tough Daytona Speedweeks.
“We are running a brand new car this weekend. We tested
in California and Las Vegas and know we can run like the
top-ten team we know we can be. I am looking forward to
it,” said Reiser.
Disappointing Daytona: Early problems for Kenseth result in 42nd place finish at
Daytona
February
20, 2005
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.
(February 20th, 2005) — A promising start for Matt
Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT Tools Racing Team did not
materialize in the top-10 finish the team was hoping for
as an engine failure brought an early end to the first
point race of the 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup season for the
DEWALT guys. An engine failure on lap 33 of the Daytona
500 spelled the end of the day for Kenseth and his team
and resulted in a 42nd place finish at Daytona
International Speedway.
Rolling off the starting
grid from the 14th position, Kenseth made a charge to
the front of the field landing in the fifth position
within the first 10 laps of the 200-lap event. When the
first caution flag slowed the field on lap 14, Kenseth
reported that the car was “real fast” and no adjustments
were made during his 14.09-second four-tire stop.
Kenseth restarted the race
in the 10th position on lap 18 but did not enjoy much
green flag racing as the caution flag waved for the
second time on lap 25 for a crash. The No. 17 came in
for another routine pit stop, taking four tires but
needing no adjustments. Upon returning to the track,
Kenseth was summoned by his crew back to the pits for a
loose lugnut on the left rear.
Kenseth would return to pit
lane twice to tighten the loose left rear and adjust the
tape on the grill, restarting the race in the 33rd
position on lap 30. Kenseth would not get the chance to
attempt to charge to the front again as he radioed his
crew on lap 31 with the news… “It’s something in the
motor.”
Kenseth advised his crew,
“The car is shaking so badly. I can’t believe it.” Crew
chief Robbie Reiser made the call to bring the No. 17
into the garage area to try to locate the problem. After
inspecting the engine, Reiser diagnosed the problem as
terminal and the No. 17 DEWALT Tools Ford was
prematurely finished for the day.
“We broke something in the
engine,” Kenseth said. “We broke a connecting rod or
something like that. It’s kind of uncommon at a plate
race. Unfortunately, it’s the second one we’ve lost this
week, so I don’t know. Our motor program is awesome, but
we just seem to have some bad luck right now. We blew a
couple at the end of last year and blew a couple to
start off this season, so I’m definitely disappointed.
It’s the best car I’ve ever had for the Daytona 500 and
I really thought we could have been a contender. I’m
kind of disappointed, but you realize that this type of
thing can happen. We’ve had a lot of good times, too,
but there are gonna be days when things go bad and this
is just one of those days.”
Next week, the Nextel Cup
Series heads to California Speedway for the Auto Club
500 on Sunday, February 27. The race will be televised
live on FOX at 3:00 p.m. (EST).

Kenseth finishes 4th in wild IROC race
Although he

Racing teammate Mark Martin who prevailed at Daytona on Friday.

n
Quote from Matt: “We broke a transmission on the lap 25
restart, and I didn’t have any third gear. I knew I was done. I
just had to go from second to fourth, lost all that momentum,
and then Danny tried to do his best to help me, but he didn’t
know I only had second gear, so he tried to pass me. Then Mark
just got by me because he had all the gears. Before that, we
were good. We were fine. I don’t think they would have gone
around me. Helio got into me pretty hard while we were drafting
and I lost the bottom, and that kind of started the mixup. Other
than that, we were good. I just needed third gear on a restart.”

Matt Kenseth Gatorade Duel Race Recap
February 17, 2005
Thursday’s Gatorade Duel kicked off the first race of
the season for Matt Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT team.
After engine problems during qualifying on Sunday,
Kenseth started the second 150–mile race in 22nd place
and drafted his way to a sixth place finish.
Kenseth worked his way up to 13th place within the first
10 laps of the race and told the team the car was pretty
good, he just needed to find the right group of cars to
push him to the front. While trying to find the right
line, Kenseth ran three wide in the middle for nearly
seven laps. He fell back to ninth and told the team he
was a bit loose since he used up the tires running three
wide.
As the halfway point of the race approached, the teams
began working on pit strategy. There had not been a
caution since lap four so the teams were forced to pit
under green-flag conditions. Kenseth told the team the
truck had become a bit tight. He brought the No. 17 into
the pits on lap 31 for four tires, fuel and an air
pressure adjustment to the left side tires to free up
the car. The DEWALT team had a quick 13.8–second stop
and Kenseth returned to the race in seventh place.
He began to work his way to the front again and on lap
36 avoided an accident in front of him that eliminated
several good cars. Kevin Harvick, who was running second
at the time, hit leader Jimmie Johnson. The two cars
spun and collected a total of seven cars. Kenseth made
it through the spinning cars without any damage and
moved up to fourth place.
He brought the car into the pits again on lap 37 since
he had flat-spotted the tires trying to avoid the
accident. The team changed four tires in 12.9 seconds
and sent Kenseth back out in fourth.
The race resumed on lap 42, and Kenseth was able to stay
in line behind Tony Stewart for a few laps, but got hung
on the outside when Stewart made his move to take the
lead. He fell back to seventh by lap 45. A few laps
later he was back to three-wide racing and was 10th with
10 laps to go.
Kenseth gained a few positions each lap and tried his
best to work his way to the front. He was two-wide
fighting for fourth with three laps to go, but was
shuffled to sixth in the final laps. He finished the
race in sixth place which will give him a 14th place
starting position in Sunday’s Daytona 500.
“Stuff changes so fast that it’s hard to get hooked up
with anybody,” Kenseth said. “Tony (Stewart) was so good
to me the whole race. I tried my best to stay with him
and on the restart I got pushing him really hard and I
thought he would have went outside of the 22 and the 31,
but he decided to stay to the bottom. I went to the
outside and I kind of messed myself up there.
“I’m really happy with the car. It’s by far the best car
we’ve ever had down here at Daytona. I feel good about
it, it handled almost perfect. I think we had as much
speed as anybody, I just didn’t do the best job of
putting the car in a winning position. I’m looking
forward to the 500 on Sunday and I think we will have a
competitive car.”

Matt Kenseth’s Thoughts on Daytona:
“I spent last weekend driving in the Rolex 24 Hour
race and I had a lot of fun, but I’m ready to get back
to driving my DEWALT car on ovals again. We had a pretty
decent test at Daytona in January and we’ve made a few
more tweaks to the car since that. Robbie (Reiser) and
the guys have worked very hard all winter to get this
car ready to go. Daytona is unusual this year since we
have less time on the track than we typically do for
Speedweeks. We have a few days off which will be nice,
but we will have to make the most of our practice time.”
Crew Chief Robbie Reiser’s Thoughts on Daytona:
“I think this team is as ready as we’ve ever been for
Daytona. The car we are taking was actually a bit slower
in testing, but it has better front downforce. We’d all
like to come out of the gate strong at Daytona, so we’ve
given Matt a car we think is capable of that.”
Things to Know:

Daytona — it is a new car
n
Kenseth has 10 starts at Daytona with three top-10
finishes.

Roush Racing driver Matt Kenseth will kick off the
2005 Busch season in the No. 17 Waste Management Ford
Taurus on Saturday, February 19th at Daytona.
Kenseth is no stranger to success in the Busch
Series. Since 1996, Kenseth has made 162 total starts,
with 17 victories and eight career pole positions. He
finished runner-up for the championship in 1998 and
third in the championship chase in 1999, his last full
year on the Busch circuit. In the 2004 season, Matt
Kenseth made 16 starts, three wins, eight top-five and
11 top-10 finishes.
Matt Kenseth’s Thoughts on Daytona:
“We finished fifth at Daytona in the Busch race last
year and I think we’ll have a really good shot at
winning this time. We tested the car at Talladega a few
weeks ago and it ran pretty well. It would be great to
qualify well so we can try to stay up front through most
of the race. The Busch race usually gets pretty wild and
we don’t need to get caught up in something because we
were in the back.”
Crew Chief Cully Barraclough’s Thoughts on Daytona:
“I think the Waste Management team is going to be
strong at Daytona. We spent two days working on our aero
package with this car at Talladega. It’s the same car we
ran fifth with last year at Daytona, so hopefully it
will be a little better. We won’t have the new engine
package for Daytona so that might hurt us a bit, but we
will have it for California the following week. With
Matt behind the wheel we feel confident everywhere we
race.”
Things to Know:
n
The No. 17 Waste Management Ford will mark Matt
Kenseth’s 163rd start in the Busch Series. The chassis
number is 43 — this car ran last year at Daytona and
finished fifth.
n
The No. 17 Waste Management Ford Taurus is crew chiefed
by Charles “Cully” Barraclough. Crew members include
front tire changer Greg Ebert, front tire carrier Chris
Brook, Jackman Tracy Duncan, rear tire carrier Bobby Sada, rear tire changer Mike Brown, Gasman Benjy Grubbs,

Scott Maxwell, Kurt Busch, and Greg Biffle finished 27th overall
and 15th in their class in the
Rolex 24 at Daytona.
The team suffered a problem early in the race and had to go to
the garage for repairs. They returned to the track many laps
down to the leader. Another failure in the final 45 minutes of the race put
them in the garage for good.

Post-race quote: Matt Kenseth: “It was good experience, and
I learned a lot. Obviously, I wish we wouldn’t have broken stuff
and would have been in the hunt. Hopefully, we can do it again.
I don’t know when the next time will be right now. These cars
are fun to drive. It was an honor to be able to race against a
lot of these guys from different forms of motorsports.”

Busch races in 2005
Mark Martin to drive seven events, while Matt Kenseth
will
power the No. 9 Ford in two
January 26, 2005CONCORD, N.C. (Jan. 26, 2005) — Pennzoil and Roush

in 2005. Seven of the races will feature the all-time
winningest driver in series’ history, Mark Martin, while
2003 Winston Cup Champion Matt Kenseth will drive the
No. 9 car in the other two events.
“We are looking forward to getting back on the track in
the No. 9 Pennzoil car,” said Martin. “We had a couple
of pretty strong runs in the No. 9 last year and
hopefully we can get Pennzoil in victory lane this
season. I’m pretty excited that we’ll be working with
Pat Tryson and an all new team on the No. 9 car so
hopefully we’ll be able to make some more noise in that
series.”
Martin will be a the helm of the No. 9 Pennzoil Ford for
events at Fontana, Las Vegas, Texas, Richmond, Loudon,
Kansas City and Homestead. Kenseth will drive the car at
Charlotte and Texas in October and November.
“It will be fun working with Pat and the No. 9 team for
a couple of races in 2005 and I look forward to driving
the No. 9 Pennzoil car,” added Kenseth. “We had a really
strong run for Pennzoil last year at Vegas and we’ll be
looking to expand on that and hopefully get a win in one
of those races. Texas and Charlotte are among my
favorite tracks, so I’ll be looking forward to both of
those races. “
Pennzoil and Roush have a deep rooted history. Pennzoil
first sponsored Jack Roush in the 1960’s, when the
former Ford Motor Company engineer was a driver himself.
This season Pennzoil is proud to once again team up with
Jack Roush as sponsor of all five 2005 Roush Racing
Nextel Cup teams as well as the No. 9 NASCAR Busch
Series Team.
