Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT Ford Fusion team headed to Talladega
Superspeedway this weekend for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499. In a race that
is known as a “crapshoot,” where anything can and does happen,
Kenseth and crew were looking to avoid trouble and bring home a
solid finish. Though Kenseth qualified a respectable 13th and was
happy with the handling of his Ford, a blown right front tire on lap
19 of the 188-lap event sent the No. 17 team to the garage for
repairs. When the DEWALT crew finally bandaged up Kenseth’s machine,
he returned to the track in 42nd place, 35 laps down to the leaders.
Kenseth limped around the track for the remainder of the race,
ultimately finishing 41st.
Joe Nemecheck led the 43-car field to the green flag under balmy
conditions in Talladega, Ala. Kenseth rolled off 13th and settled in
for the start of the race. Kenseth maintained inside the top 15 for
16 laps. However, trouble struck on lap 19 in the form of a blown
right front tire. The incident sent Kenseth’s Ford into the wall in
turn two causing significant damage. The damages incurred sent
Kenseth and crew to the garage. For more than 30 laps, the No. 17
crew worked to repair Kenseth’s Ford and on lap 55 Kenseth returned
to the track, 35 laps down.
For the remainder of the race Kenseth nursed the DEWALT Ford
around the track, trying to make up as much ground as possible,
however 41st place would be the best Kenseth and crew could manage.
“It was another disappointing weekend for us,” said Kenseth. “We
had a decent car, we qualified pretty well and I was looking forward
to at least making it to the end, but it didn’t work out that way.
We blew our tire and that pretty much ended our day. We ran around
there at the end just trying to stay out of the way. We managed to
pick up a few spots, but just another terrible day for us.”
The seventh caution flag of the day fell on the final lap,
signaling the end of the race, when a gaggle of cars racing for
finishing position started spinning behind the leaders. Kyle Busch
was in the lead when the checkered flag finally fell signaling the
end of the race. Juan Pablo Montoya was second; Denny Hamlin, third;
Roush Fenway Racing driver David Ragan came home fourth; and Brian
Vickers completed the top five.
The disappointing finish at Talladega dropped Kenseth and the No.
17 DEWALT team from 15th to 18th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
driver point standings. Kenseth is currently 438 points behind point
leader Jeff Burton.
Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT NANO Technology team will travel to
Richmond, Va., next weekend for racing action under the lights at
Richmond International Raceway. The No. 17 team will take to the
track on Saturday evening for the Crown Royal presents Your Name

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Talladega:
“We haven’t been all that consistent this year. We wrecked at
Daytona, did okay at Fontana, had some issues at Vegas, just
seems like we haven’t really been hitting our potential yet this
year. We’re a good team with great resources and the
capabilities of running well each week; we’ve just not been
living up to our potential so far. So, for Talladega I’m hoping
that our situation will turn around and we’ll start getting the
consistent top-five, top-10 finishes we’re capable of.
“Talladega is just one of those unknown tracks. You could
lead 190 laps, then get wrecked or lose the draft and end up
finishing 43rd. Last time we raced there it was a single-file
line for most of the race and not a lot of fun. It’s hard to say
what the race will be like this time. Everyone’s made a lot of
progress with the new cars, so hopefully the racing will be
better this time around. My hopes for the DEWALT team are make
sure we’re there at the end to get a good finish.”
Sprint Cup Crew Chief Chip Bolin on racing at
Talladega:
“In the fall race at Talladega last year a lot of cars laid
back for most of the race in hopes of avoiding “the big one.”
Yes that strategy may be the smart thing to do, but that is not
an option for team 17. Matt is a fierce competitor and that plan
does not suit him, or his racing style. So our plan of attack
this time is to simply stay out of trouble. If you have a fast
car, you can make your own luck at Daytona, because the faster
cars will work their way to the front and be able to stay out of
trouble. Talladega is pretty much a case of 43 cars riding
around hoping no one will wreck you because the handling of the
car is a nonissue. For me, the racing at Talladega isn’t my most
favorite. I just hope we can make it to the end without trouble
and get a solid top-10 finish.”

F or Matt Kenseth
and the No. 17 DEWALT NANO Ford team, this weekend’s events at
Phoenix International Raceway were anything but kind. After
struggling to find speed during practice sessions and qualifying a
disappointing 27th for the Subway Fresh Fit 500, Kenseth and crew
were hoping that things would turn around for them during the
312-lap Saturday night race. However, that would not be the case.
Extremely tight handling conditions plagued the No. 17 and led to a
blown right front tire. The damage incurred in the single-car
incident on lap on lap 41, sent Kenseth and crew to the garage for
more than 40 laps. When the No. 17 returned to the track, too much
was lost and Kenseth finished the race in 38th position, 43 laps
down to the leader.
Ryan Newman led the 43-car field to the green flag on Saturday
evening. Kenseth, in the black No. 17 DEWALT NANO Technology Ford
Fusion, rolled off 27th. When the first caution was displayed on lap
10, Kenseth started to report that his Ford was handling “very
tight.” Crew chief Chip Bolin directed Kenseth to pit. In hopes of
remedying the handling problems, Bolin directed the No. 17 crew to
insert a spring rubber and adjust air pressures. Green flag racing
commenced on lap 16 and Kenseth was scored in 32nd place.
Over the next several laps Kenseth continued to battle the
ill-handling No. 17. On lap 43 the right front tire blew on the
DEWALT NANO Ford sending it into the wall in turn four. The damages
incurred in the incident sent Kenseth and crew to the garage. For
more than 40 laps, the No. 17 crew worked to repair Kenseth’s Ford
and on lap 83 Kenseth returned to the track.
For the remainder of the race Kenseth made up as much ground as
possible, gaining five positions before the checkers fell. Kenseth
crossed the finish line in 38th place, 43 laps down.
“It was just an all around disappointing weekend for us,” said
Kenseth. “We could never get the right setup during practice and
didn’t qualify well, and then our car was just way too tight to
drive in the race. We blew our tire and that pretty much ended our
day. We ran around there at the end just trying to stay out of the
way. We managed to pick up a few spots, but just a terrible day for
us.”
Jimmie Johnson scored his first win of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series season. Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards and Mark
Martin followed to complete the top five.
The disappointing finish at Phoenix dropped Kenseth and the No.
17 DEWALT team from 13th to 15th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
driver point standings. Kenseth is currently 346 points behind point
leader Jeff Burton and 46 points out of 12th place.

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Phoenix: “I’ve always enjoyed racing
at Phoenix and we’ve had some success there in the past. We
weren’t too bad there last year and I think we should be able to
compete this weekend.
“I was pretty disappointed after Texas, but, looking back on
it, it was a pretty good finish for us. We ran really well all
day, even though our car didn’t handle all that well. Chip and
the guys did a great job working on the car all day and our pit
stops kept us out front. We were probably a fifth-place car but
didn’t get tires at the end and that hurt us a lot on that last
restart. It was a 50-50 call and it didn’t pay off for us. We
didn’t get the finish we were hoping for, but we led some laps,
got the bonus points and ended up with a top 10, so I’m pleased
with our improvements.”
Sprint Cup Crew Chief Chip Bolin on racing at
Phoenix: “We’re taking a brand new car
to Phoenix this weekend. Since all of the new cars are
practically identical, bringing a new car to race is very
common. The trick to racing well will be working out the
balancing act between being free enough to roll through the
center of one and two, and not being too loose in three and
four. If we can accomplish that, we should be very competitive.
Matt typically races well at Phoenix and I’m expecting a great
finish for our DEWALT NANO team.”

KENSETH TO MAKE 300TH START AT PHOENIX
Cup Series Champion to Reach Racing Milestone in Subway Fresh Fit

Matt Kenseth, 2003 NASCAR Cup Series Champion and driver of Roush
Fenway Racing’s No. 17 Ford Fusion, will make his 300th NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series start this weekend, under the lights, at Phoenix
International Speedway. Sporting the black DEWALT NANO Technology
paint scheme, Kenseth will reach the impressive milestone this
Saturday evening in the Subway Fresh Fit 500.
“It’s hard to believe I’ll be making my 300th start,” said
Kenseth. “It doesn’t seem that long ago when I was racing for the
Reiser family in the Busch Series, with no sponsor, just hoping I
could have the opportunity to race in this series some day. I’ve
been very fortunate throughout my career. It’s pretty cool to have
lasted this long in such a competitive series, but I could not have
done it without the support of a lot of great people and a great
sponsor like DEWALT.”
Since his 1998 Cup Series debut, Kenseth has accumulated three
poles, 16 wins, 80 top-five and 146 top-10 finishes. The Cambridge,
Wis., native has logged 113,328.6 miles on NASCAR tracks and led a
total of 4,973 laps.

After
last week’s disappointing race at Martinsville, Matt Kenseth and the
No. 17 DEWALT Ford Fusion team headed into Texas Motor Speedway this
weekend looking for a little redemption. Since Kenseth typically
runs well at the 1.5-mile Texas track, posting four top fives in his
last five starts, the No. 17 team was hoping for another solid run.
Over the course of the extended 339-lap event, Kenseth and crew
spent 334 of 339 laps in the top 15, posted 28 of the race’s fastest
laps and led 68 laps. Despite the impressive stats, handling
problems and a late-race gamble that didn’t pay off left Kenseth
with a solid, but disappointing, ninth-place finish in the Samsung
500.
Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT team enjoyed their best starting
position of the season with a qualifying effort of eighth. Though
Kenseth reported that his Roush Fenway Racing machine was
experiencing “loose” handling conditions, he gained and then
maintained sixth place throughout the first portion of the race.
Crew chief Chip Bolin and crew made numerous adjustments to the
DEWALT Fusion throughout the day. In spite of their efforts, Kenseth
still reported that the No. 17 was handling “tight in the center,
loose off.” Though he was not satisfied with the handling of his
Ford, Kenseth’s on-track performance did not suffer as he continued
to maintain sixth position and turn laps comparable to the race
leaders’.
By the caution on lap 108, Kenseth had worked his way up to third
place when he entered the pits for four tires, fuel, and an air
pressure adjustment. With the express servicing of The Killer Bees,
Kenseth exited the pits as the race leader. He would maintain the
top running position throughout two more pit stops under caution and
a total of 68 laps.
On the lap 180 restart, Kenseth relinquished the lead and by lap
189 had fallen back to fifth place. Though Kenseth reported that the
DEWALT Ford was handling “better,” long green flag runs separated
the field and he started loosing ground on the leader. A much-needed
caution fell on lap 294 and Kenseth was scored in sixth place. Bolin
called Kenseth to pit road for a final time for four tires. Kenseth
restarted the race with 35 laps to go in seventh place.
By the race’s final caution on lap 329, Kenseth had worked his
way back up to fifth position and pit strategy would become key at
this point. With just 10 cars on lead lap, a pit stop would be a
gamble — come in and risk losing track position or stay out and risk
being passed by cars with fresher tires. Bolin directed Kenseth to
stay out and on the restart Kenseth fell victim to the competitors
with fresher tires. In the final green-white-checker finish, Kenseth
was passed by the sixth place car of Clint Bowyer. Bowyer lost
control of his car and in attempt to avoid a larger accident,
Kenseth was passed by several competitors at the line. He ultimately
finished the race in ninth place, a solid, but disappointing finish.
“Tires would have helped a lot at the end,” said Kenseth. “When
you’re the first one on old tires and everybody’s got new tires
behind you, they’re going to eat your lunch. It was a 50-50 call and
we were right in the middle, and we tried it and it didn’t work.”
Before an estimated crowd of 190,000, Carl Edwards won the
Samsung 500 — his third of 2008. Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Ryan
Newman and Denny Hamlin followed to complete the top five.
The ninth-place finish in Texas boosted Kenseth and the No. 17
DEWALT team from 15th to 13th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver
point standings. Kenseth is currently 245 points behind point leader
Jeff Burton.

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Texas Motor Speedway: “I always look forward
to racing at Texas, especially after Martinsville and the
troubles we had there. Texas is nothing like Martinsville. It’s
fast, there are several grooves, and the racing is a lot of fun.
So, to say the least, I’m ready to race there.
“Texas is fast and since the pavement has aged a little bit,
there are multiple grooves. You can move around a lot more,
especially with the new cars. It’s more challenging and a lot of
fun for the driver. I’m sure the racing will be somewhat
different with the new cars. We’re bringing the car that I
finished fifth with at Fontana earlier this year. I really like
that car and have been happy with its performance so far. So,
I’m expecting to unload and be competitive from the start. That
makes it fun to come to the race track when you have that and
hopefully we’ll have that this weekend.”
Sprint Cup Crew Chief Chip Bolin on racing at
Texas: “We’re bringing RK-550
to Texas this weekend. The car we raced at Fontana and finished
fifth with there. The car is seemingly really easy to work with
and really responds to Matt’s driving style. Texas is always a
place I look forward to going. We typically have pretty good
results on the track, but we generally eat very well there too.
The bar-be-que, steak, and fried chicken are second to none.”
