Matt Kenseth on racing at
Pocono:
“We’ll be looking to bounce back this weekend at Pocono. Last
weekend was a huge disappointment for us at Indy. We had a
decent top-10 car, but with the tire issues, we ended up
finishing 38th. It was pretty frustrating all weekend. We
unloaded pretty good, with high hopes for a good finish. So
blowing a tire like we did and tearing up our car was pretty
embarrassing.
“This weekend we’re looking to bounce back at Pocono, which
has really been one of our tougher tracks. We’re bringing back
the same car we raced there earlier this year and hopefully
we’ll be able to better our seventh-place finish. A solid finish
at Pocono would go a long way towards gaining some momentum in
this stretch run leading up to the Chase.”
Sprint Cup Crew Chief Chip Bolin on racing at
Pocono : “We’re
bringing a car that we tested here back in June. It was a brand
new car then, but Matt was pleased with it and we ended up with
a top-10 finish. We’ve put a lot of work into this car and I
think we’ve made some big improvements. Hopefully all of that
will prove true when we unload on Friday.
“We’ve seen it come down to fuel mileage in the past, so
we’ve got to do our part to stay on top of pit strategy and be
on top of our game and take care of everything that we have
control over. After such a disappointing race last weekend, we
have to have a solid finish at Pocono.”

Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT Ford Fusion team came to Indianapolis
Motor Speedway this weekend with high hopes for a solid finish in
Sunday’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. After being among the
fastest cars in each of the weekend’s practice sessions and laying
down a respectable qualifying effort of 10th place it looked as
though the No. 17 team were headed for another top-10 finish.
However, a rough track and a stubborn tire that refused to cooperate
made the race at the Brickyard a series of NASCAR-imposed,
precautionary pit stops and broke the racing into 10- or 12-lap
dashes. Despite the precautions, a blown right rear tire on lap 46 —
one lap shy of the competition yellow demolished the right side of
Kenseth’s Ford and sent him to the garage for several laps. After
the DEWALT Ford was patched up, Kenseth rejoined the race 16 laps
down to the leaders to make the most of day. He would ultimately
finish the race in 38th place.
Jimmie Johnson led the 43-car field to green at Indianapolis
Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon and Kenseth followed in 10th
position. Tires were on everyone’s mind at the start of the race as
all competitors experienced tire troubles during the weekend’s
practice sessions. NASCAR and Goodyear agreed to have a mandatory
caution after 10 laps to allow teams to check tire wear as a safety
precaution.
The field didn’t make it 10 laps — as a single-car accident
brought out the first caution on lap five. NASCAR moved the
competition yellow to lap 14. But, just one lap shy of the mandated
caution another accident occurred and the mandatory caution went
into effect one lap later on lap 15.
In eighth place, Kenseth reported that he was overall pleased
with the handling of the DEWALT Ford as he made his way down pit
road for two fresh right side tires. Despite a speedy pit stop,
Kenseth rejoined the race on lap 17 in ninth place, as not all
competitors opted to pit.
After examining the tires of competitors, NASCAR mandated a
second precautionary stop for lap 32, and then lowered it to lap 30.
However, once again the caution was brought out earlier due to an
on-track incident resulting from a blown tire.
Kenseth made his way down pit road for the second time of the
race on lap 32 for four fresh tires and fuel. Following his pit
stop, crew chief Chip Bolin informed Kenseth that his right side
tires were severely worn and err on the side of caution during the
next run.
Once again, the mandatory caution lap was one lap away when
Kenseth blew a right rear tire and spun down the backstretch. The
impact from the blown right tire sent rubber and fender pieces
flying and destroyed the right side of the DEWALT Ford. Kenseth went
to the garage where the No. 17 team thrashed to repair the damaged
Ford. After several minutes the team had bandaged up the DEWALT Ford
and Kenseth returned to the track in 40th place, 16 laps down to the
leaders.
Though Kenseth managed to gain two positions, he would limp the
No. 17 around the track for the rest of the day. In the end,
defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson held off Roush
Fenway Racing driver, Carl Edwards to capture the win at the
Brickyard. Denny Hamlin, Elliott Sadler and Jeff Gordon followed to
complete the top five.
“I could see in the mirror that part of the quarter panel was
blown off,” Kenseth said of the damaged incurred during the
blown-tire incident. “It’s a really, really, really disappointing
situation. This one of the two biggest races of the year, and to
never have this tire here before and not come and do an open test
and to work on these things and work on the tires, it’s pretty darn
disappointing. We had a great car today. I feel bad for the fans;
we’re running three-quarters speed because we’re worried of the
tires blowing out, and they got blown out every eight laps. So,
pretty disappointed.”
The disappointing finish for Kenseth and company dropped their
points standing from eighth to 11th — 638 points behind the leader,
Kyle Busch and 33 points out of 10th place.

DID YOU HAVE IDEA ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE? “Well, yeah. I
could see it in the mirror that part of the quarterpanel was blown
off. It’s a really, really, really disappointing situation. This one
of the two biggest races of the year, and to never have this tire

DID IT GIVE MUCH NOTICE? “You get about six corners’ worth of
warning, about a lap and a half. It’ll just get loose if it’s the
right rear. That’s when it started shaking about three seconds
before it blew out”

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Indianapolis:
“Indy ranks right at the top, or close to the top, on races
you’d like to win in your career. I think everyone wants to win
the Daytona 500, that’s the biggest one you want to win. But,
certainly the Brickyard is right there with it. We’ve been close
a few times and we’ve been real competitive. Actually a couple
of times we’ve been there we’ve had some problems, but we’ve
always ran pretty good. I always feel like we’ll have a shot
when we go there, and it’s certainly one we’d like to pull off.” Sprint Cup Crew Chief Chip Bolin on racing at
Indianapolis: “Indy’s
a special place for anyone in racing. It has a ton of history
and when you think about all of the greats that have won there
throughout the years it would mean a lot to be able to add our
names to that list.
“We’re bringing a brand new car this weekend — built
specifically with Indy in mind. Hopefully we aren’t too far off
and can zero in on what we need for the race. If we can get it
to turn like Matt wants it to turn, then I feel like we can be
competitive on Sunday.”

F or Matt Kenseth
and the No. 17 USG Ford Fusion team this weekend’s race at
Chicagoland Speedway was anything but a walk in the park. After
suffering a flat tire on lap 123, Kenseth battled back from 37th
place, one lap down to capture a solid seventh-place finish. The
top-10 finish moved Kenseth into eighth place in overall point
standings.
Rain cancelled qualifying on Thursday evening and the starting
line up was set by point standings, so Kyle Busch led the 43-car
field to green on Saturday evening. Kenseth rolled off ninth and had
worked his way into fourth place by the mandatory caution on Lap 35.
Kenseth reported that the USG Ford was handling “a little too
tight”; therefore the No. 17 crew utilized this caution period to
make an air pressure adjustment to Kenseth’s Ford. After also
receiving four tires and two cans of fuel, Kenseth rejoined the race
on lap 40 in seventh place – though the pit stop was performed in
12.5 seconds, Kenseth was held up on pit road by other competitors
and lost several track positions.
Denny Hamlin's No. 11 Toyota shut off at Lap 48, prompting a
second caution, which brought Kenseth back to pit road yet again.
Still reporting that the No. 17 was experiencing tight handling
conditions, Kenseth requested more adjustments to remedy the issue.
In fourth place, Kenseth came down pit road for two tires and fuel
along with an air pressure and track bar adjustment. When the green
flag waved again on lap 52, Kenseth was in 10th place, as not all
cars opted to pit.
Over the next 40 laps Kenseth continued to report that his Ford
Fusion was experiencing tight handling conditions. So under green
flag pit stops around lap 92, crew chief Chip Bolin called for a
more aggressive spring rubber adjustment. The adjustment seemed to
work because by lap 116 Kenseth had taken over the lead.
Trouble however would strike on lap 122 when Kenseth radioed to
his crew that he a flat tire. On lap 123 he entered the pits in
fifth place for four fresh tires. Kenseth rejoined the race after
the unscheduled pit stop in 37th position, one lap down to the
leaders.
Kenseth would make his way up to 30th place – the Lucky Dog
position on lap 160 and a caution on lap 176 would put Kenseth back
on the lead lap.
With just under 100 laps remaining in competition, Kenseth had
his work cut out for him to capture a solid finish. However,
lap-by-lap he picked off the competition and by his final pit stop
on lap 225, Kenseth had worked his way up 11th place.
Three more cautions would stall the race before the race would
conclude in a green, white, checker finish. Kenseth ultimately took
the checkers in seventh place.
Kyle Busch captured his seventh win of 2008 in the LifeLock.com
400. Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart
followed to complete the top five.
“I’ve passed a lot of cars in my career, but not with these
cars,” Kenseth said. “These are a lot tougher to pass with. They
just get so tight. We just had that flat tire and there were a lot
of green-flag running, and it took us a long time for us to get our
lap back, and then we just sort of ran out of time. Overall, it was
a great night. We had a really fast car; we just couldn’t get quite
the finish we thought.”
“Our USG Ford was one of the better cars out there tonight just
because I thought our set-up was a little bit better. We were better
than most, but it was still a huge advantage to be out front. When
we were out front, we were running side-by-side with the 18 and he
ended up winning the race. We could run with those guys, we really
could. We’ve got to figure out how to get there, you know, you can’t
have flat tires, you got to figure out the pit-stop strategy and
whatnot to make it happen. It’s just tough to drive by those guys.
But, overall I’m happy with our top-10 finish.”
The top-10 finish for Kenseth and company boosts their points
standing from ninth to eighth — 564 points behind the leader, Kyle
Busch, and 34 points ahead of 12th place.
Kenseth and the No. 17 crew will enjoy a week off, but will
return to racing action at the Brickyard on July 27.

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Chicagoland: Cup: “Chicago is a great
track and one I really enjoy racing at. It’s wide and fast, real
smooth and now that the pavement has aged, you’re starting to
see a wider groove. It’s a big race weekend for me, with my
hometown not too far away (Cambridge, Wis.), and it’s a big race
weekend for our sponsor USG Sheetrock. We’ve had a car capable
of winning the past three years but for one reason or another,
that just hasn’t happened. Hopefully we can do a little bit
better this year and get a win for USG at Chicago.
“We’re coming off of a great weekend at Daytona and I’m
really proud of how well we performed last week. I hoping to
build on that momentum and get a win. We are getting really
close to the Chase and we need as many points as we can get —
you get the most points for winning, so a win would be huge for
us.”
NNS: “It’s no secret that Chicago is one of my
favorite race tracks. I’ve had a lot of success there over the
years and I always look forward to racing there. On the other
hand, I’ve never won at Chicago and that’s a monkey I’d like to
get off my back. I think I’ve finished second there twice in the
Cup car and twice in the Nationwide car. I’ve had really good
races there where I thought we could’ve won, but something
always happens. This weekend, hopefully that won’t be the case
and we can get a win for the Valvoline team at Chicago.”
Sprint Cup Crew Chief Chip Bolin on racing at
Chicagoland: “This year’s race will be
a bit different with the new cars and a fairly new team, but the
desire to put the No. 17 in victory lane is just the same.
“The car we’re taking is the same car Matt raced at Fontana,
Texas and Charlotte. It’s one of Matt’s favorites and one we’ve
had a lot of success with it this year. Hopefully we’ll hit on
the right setup from the get-go and that will translate into
good things on Saturday.”
NNS Crew Chief Pierre (P.K.) Kuttel on racing at
Chicagoland: “This will be my first
race with Matt, so I’m pretty anxious to see how the weekend
will go. Matt is an experienced racer who has had tons of
success, so I know we’ll have that on our side this weekend.
Hopefully we’ve put together a fast car for him and we can go
out there and get a top-five finish.”

started and ended the Coke Zero 400 Saturday night, both on and off
the track as Matt Kenseth and the No. 17 R+L Carriers Ford Fusion
team raced their way to a third-place finish — a career best for
Kenseth in 18 starts. Kenseth took the green flag in the 19th
position after laying down a lap time of 48.799 seconds during
Friday afternoon’s time trials at Daytona International Speedway.
For much of the 162-lap event, which ended with a
green-white-checker finish, Kenseth battled a loose-handling car.
However, with aggressive adjustments made in speedy, scheduled pit
stops, the No. 17 crew was able to keep Kenseth running up front and
make the No. 17 Ford a competitive machine. By the end of the race
Kenseth was in contention for the win. But after an exciting night
of racing, a caution was thrown on the final lap and the field was
frozen with Kenseth in third place. The top-three finish boosted
Kenseth four spots in overall point standings, where he is now
ranked ninth.
Paul Menard started from the pole for this first time in his
NASCAR Sprint Cup career. Kenseth rolled off 19th,and soon made a
charge for the top 15, despite reporting that the R+L Carriers Ford
was handling “extremely loose.”
A caution on lap l9 came none too soon for Kenseth as the loose
handling conditions had worsened and the No. 17 was in desperate
need of adjustments. Kenseth entered pit road in 15th position and
crew chief Chip Bolin called for track bar and air pressure
adjustments to alleviate the loose handling issues. Kenseth also
received four tires and fuel before rejoining the race in seventh
place on lap 24.
Over the next two runs, Kenseth continued to report to struggle
with loose handling conditions; nonetheless he managed to make gains
on the track. By his third scheduled pit stop, which came under
caution around lap 90, he was running inside the top five. But after
the swift stop performed by his crew, the Killer Bees, Kenseth began
to experience trouble and fell from second place on lap 78 to 34th
position on lap 96.
During this run, Kenseth reported that the No. 17 was “terrible
loose” and that he may have a flat tire. Even with the ill-handling
car, Kenseth remained on the track and avoided an accident. A
much-needed caution fell on lap 109. In just under 13 seconds, the
No. 17 crew bolted on four fresh tires, filled the R+L Carriers Ford
with fuel, and adjusted the track bar and air pressure on Kenseth’s
Ford. After examining the tires from the previous run, numerous
blisters and tears were discovered and thought to be the reason for
the ill-handling Ford. All fixed up but with just 46 laps remaining,
Kenseth took the green flag in 28th place and once again made his
charge to the front.
Kenseth would make his final pit stop of the night around lap 124
under caution. He entered the pits in 23rd position for four tires,
fuel, and a wedge adjustment. He restarted the race with 32 laps
remaining in 13th place.
Despite four caution periods, Kenseth worked his way up fourth
and that is he where he took the green flag for the final
green-white-checker restart. In a wild finish so typical of races at
Daytona, Kyle Busch won by a hair over hard-charging Roush Fenway
Racing driver Carl Edwards while a chain-reaction accident behind
them sent up a cloud of smoke that covered the track. Kenseth
avoided the trouble and passed the checkers in third place. Kurt
Busch and another Roush Fenway Racing teammate, David Ragan,
followed to complete the top five.
“It was crazy. You never know what’s going to happen on one of
those green-white-checkers,” said Kenseth. “You’re pretty sure at a
plate race with a green-white-checkered there’s going to be wreck
and you hope that you’re not in it, basically. I was trying to push
Carl because we had such a good restart and Kurt [Busch] was behind
me pushing me like crazy, but he was trying to look different
directions on Kyle [Busch], and Kyle was blocking like crazy and he
was all over the straightaway. I was scared to hit him; I thought he
was going to spin out. And finally I did give him a little shove and
he got sideways and Kyle went up to block him and got sideways, and
I was right in the middle of it and was going to wreck, so I had to
get out of the gas. If Kyle could’ve gotten straight and if we
could’ve gotten a farther-back run on Kyle, I think we both could’ve
gone by him, and maybe race for the win, but we couldn’t quite get
that figured out exactly right. So, anyway, happy with the finish. I
think that’s the best I ever finished at Daytona. The guys made
great adjustments, and we were pretty competitive, so it feels
good.”
The stellar third-place finish for Kenseth and company boosts
their points standing from 13th to ninth — 520 points behind the
leader, Kyle Busch, and 21 points ahead of 12th place.

Matt Kenseth – No. 17 R & L Carriers Ford Fusion – finished
3rd:
“It was crazy. You never
know what’s going to happen on one of those green-white-checkers.
You’re pretty sure at a plate race with a green-white-checkered
there’s going to be wreck, and you hope that you’re not in it,
basically.
“The restart was really odd. Kyle went about 20 car lengths late
and everybody was just running into each other like crazy. I’ve
never been hit so hard and hit people so hard before they ever threw
a green. So, that sort of got it started and then I guess Kyle
must’ve had a little run, and Jeff got spun out. And then down the
back, I was trying to push Carl because we had such a good restart
and Kurt was behind me pushing me like crazy, but he was trying to
look different directions on Kyle, and Kyle was blocking like crazy
and he was all over the straightaway. I was scared to hit him; I
thought he was going to spin out. And finally I did give him a

happy with the finish. I think that’s the best I ever finished at
Daytona. The guys made great adjustments, and we were pretty
competitive, so it feels good.
KYLE BUSCH HAS WON SIX TIMES THIS YEAR. WHAT ARE YOUR
IMPRESSIONS OF HIM AS A DRIVER, AND WHY IS HE SO GOOD? “I think
he’s the same driver he’s been the last couple of years. First of
all, I know you can only run as fast as your equipment will carry
you. So, obviously, he’s got good equipment. I think a lot of times
you’ll get together with somebody and have good chemistry and can
figure this stuff out better than maybe you can with somebody else.
And, obviously, he’s been able to hit it off with his team really
good over there, and obviously they got good stuff. And, he’s just
been pretty much on fire, so he’s been having an exceptional year,
that’s for sure.”
YOU HAVE NOT
FARED WELL IN THE DAYTONA 500. WHY DO YOU HAVE MORE SUCCESS IN THIS
RACE? “I don’t know. It’s hard for me to remember back every
race. We were running, I think, third or fourth, and had a great car
in the 500, a way better car than what we had tonight, and got
wrecked. I couldn’t do anything about it, I was beside somebody and
they ran me in the wall, so I couldn’t really do anything about
that. I guess that’s the last one I can remember. So, I don’t know
that it really matters what time of year it is or what race, I think
it’s just more circumstances than anything.”

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Daytona:
“Daytona has
been very frustrating over the past couple of years, for us
anyway. We’ve had good cars, but it seems like something always
happens to take us out of contention. Restrictor-plate racing,
for me, is maddening. You have to make the right decisions, but
a lot of it is luck. You have to depend on other cars to help
you get to the front. If I have a good car and I’m riding second
or third on the last lap and I pull out of line, I might win it,
but I might finish sixth, or 10th, or worse. You’re really at
the mercy of the cars behind you, and for whatever reason, I
haven’t been able to make it work at the end and win one of
these things. No one would like to change that more than me this
weekend.”
Crew Chief Chip Bolin on
racing at
Daytona:
“The biggest thing for us this weekend is to make sure we take
care of everything on our end to help Matt on the track. Daytona
is a lot different than Talladega although both are often
compared to one another. Daytona has bumps and different grooves
and there’s much more suspension travel, so you have to treat
your setup a lot like you would on intermediate tracks. There
are so many things out of your control when it comes to plate
racing, so you better hit all the marks on everything you can
control, or you can really dig yourself a hole. It’s our job to
make sure the car is set up just right, to make the right calls
in the pits and to make sure we have flawless pit stops all
night to get Matt track position, keep him up in front of the
draft, and hopefully in contention to win by the end of the
race.”
