History was made on September
20, 1998, when
Matt Kenseth substituted
for Bill Elliott in the McDonalds #94 Ford Taurus. Bill’s father, George,
had passed away just before the race, and Matt was asked to fill in.
Matt
qualified the Cup car in the 16th position and quickly moved towards the
front of the field, actually running in second for a while behind race
winner Mark Martin. Matt would go on to finish in 6th place, the best
finish in a Winston Cup debut since Rusty Wallace in 1980.
