Kenseth 26th after long, hot Daytona afternoon

August 16, 2020

Daytona International Speedway (Daytona Beach, Fla.)

234.65 miles

Start: 16th | Finish: 26th Points: 11 | Standings: 28th

  • Today was the first-time for NASCAR Cup Series teams to race on the Daytona Road Course; the race was rescheduled for Daytona after the Watkins Glen race was cancelled.

  • Lightning in the area caused a 30 minute delay in the race at Lap 36 when the race was red-flagged.

  • Aside from the stage breaks and weather, the caution flag was only shown once today.

  • Kenseth fought several issues throughout the afternoon--reporting no rear grip in his car effecting his drive off the corner, and an issue with the cool box not working on the 92 degree Sunday afternoon heat.

  • The caution flag was shown four times for a total of seven laps.

  • The lead changed 13 times among six drivers.

Phil Surgen, Crew Chief, No. 42 Clover Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE “Today was a tough one for us on the road course at Daytona. The car lacked drive-off for most of the race, having trouble getting off the corners, and we ultimately just couldn’t make anything happen throughout the race. We didn’t have too many chances to work on the car throughout the day with a limited number of cautions. Unfortunately the changes we made didn’t help our issues too much. It was the first road course race for us with Matt, so we’ll take what we learned today and use that to be better when we race on the Roval (Charlotte Motor Speedway) later in the season.”

NCS teams will head to Dover International Speedway next week for a doubleheader weekend. The Drydene 311 will be run on Saturday, Aug. 22 and Sunday, Aug. 23. Both races will air live on NBC Sports, MRN affiliates and SiriusXM NASCAR Channel 90 beginning at 4 p.m. ET each day.
